PostSubject: THOR, God of Thunder (and Marvel Movies, as I understand it...)   THOR, God of Thunder (and Marvel Movies, as I understand it...) EmptySat May 07, 2011 5:31 pm

I praised Kick-Ass in my last movie thread as being among the best superhero movies, and now you can add another to the top of that list. Thor is flat-out awesome in every sense of the word.

I mean, I liked X-Men 2, Iron Man, Spidey 1 & 2. The Punisher movies were cool. Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk were decent enough. But as Marvel movies go, this one easily stands among the best of them, if not the best.

Hard to place it over the cornerstone of the genre (The Dark Knight, imo) but it kicked just as much ass. One thing that it has going for it is that The Dark Knight was dark and foreboding piece. It was good but it had very few laughs (outside of the sadistic ones, that is).

Thor had some great laughs for sure, but I was pleasantly surprised how it maintained a balance between a serious plot and light-hearted fun. It managed to pull off the absurdity of the character without being over-the-top and corny, which, let's face it... that's freaking hard to do.

The shining star in this movie was easily the title character. Chris Hemsworth pulls off a great young, arrogant king-of-the-gods-to-be and he has the acting chops to show the progression of the character to a more noble, down-to-earth hero. The character development was fantastic.

I think my favorite part about the whole movie was spark in the eyes of Thor. Here's a guy who just loves life. You could see he just enjoyed being who he was, and that was one constant throughout the flick, even as he learned a bit of much-needed humility.

I saw this film recently too and loved it!

You're right, it had a brilliant balance between light-hearted fun (and humour) with the more serious side to it.

There were, in my opinion, two good character-development things going on. Obviously Chris Hemsworth as Thor. He was good, though I did find his whole 'being more humble' a little quick. But I guess they were stuck with time.

His brother Loki was also really well developed I think. Without spoiling things for those who haven't seen it, his development was almost opposite of Thor's. Kind of like a mirror. I thought his acting was superb also.

And I still love Natalie Portman and Stellan SkarsgÄrd HAHA!

There was a key breaking point for the "humbling" factor, so they had a very good reason for that part of his change.

I'd put it on level with Iron man 2 and The Incredible Hulk. I was a little bored at one point or another. But over all, good movie.

No worries about that. I've been sitting through credits since the early 80's (after my first viewing of Cannonball Run) - one never knows what you may get to see - and I'm usually slightly disapointed if there isn't a trreat of some sort in or after the credits.

I'm pretty sure the only Marvel movie since X-Men: The Last Stand that didn't have a little teaser at the end was The Incredible Hulk.

There are only a certain class of movies that will reward you for doing so.

I think it safe to go home right after for a movie like The Hurt Locker (unless you want to see an exploding Iraqi or something).

I just saw it tonight, and I liked it. Didn't think it was "great" necessarily. I was just too weirded out that they turned Norse Myth into a sci-fi inter-galactic plot.

The best part of the movie was how often the line "Thor, Odin's son..." was mentioned. That just so happens to be the opening line in the chorus of one of my favourite songs: Twilight of the Thunder God by Amon Amarth. So whenever the line was uttered my friend and I (who also knows the song) would finish it:

Thor, Odin's Son
Protector of mankind.
Ride to meet your fate,
Your destiny awaits.

Got some confused looks from people Laughing

Odinson is actually his last name in marvel universe lore. Thor Odinson would then be his full name.

I'll have to give it a rewatch. I think I sold my copy to Hastings here awhile back, but I might still have it somewhere...

Actually it didn't. The cool "epilogue" portion with the cameo is prior to the credits.

Cool, Ben! FWIW, I thought he was decent in the first movie, but he really came into his own in Avengers.

It was sold out in every viewing yesterday here in my town except for the viewing I went to, in the morning. Crazy insane. I know it opened a week or so prior overseas than here in the US, but it's already cracked $1B worldwide this weekend. When I left the place was jam-packed, 90% of the people there waiting to see Avengers.

Maybe because it was an awesome movie. Wink

It won't win any awards for story telling, but it's about as good an entertaining action movie as can be made. For most of the movie, Iron Man was the star, and then when the battle at the end began the Hulk stole the show. Those two scenes in particular with Thor and then with Loki were hilarious. Very Happy

It might not win an Oscar for best picture or script or director (I would argue that it easily should, but then, I'm biased), but I wouldn't be surprised to see it win for ensemble cast (LotR did back in the day), and it will definitely win an award for special effects and possibly costume and sound editing. I thought the soundtrack was excellent.

I really liked it "The Avengers." The plot was easy to follow for someone who is not really into the comics (its been about...17 years since I read any Marvel/DC comics lol). The characters were pretty well introduced, with the exception of Hawkeye. And Dr. Banner. My god. For some reason, I was convinced for the first half the movie that he was Dr. Jekyll rofl. Fail!

So, I was kinda crushed yesterday when my friends were hanging out with us and we were watching it. They spent the entire time dissing the movie, finding every tiny little plot flaw and making fun of every character. Especially Captain America, who they kept saying did not embody the US in any way. I disagree. He's not supposed to be real America but rather the way we perceive ourselves as a nation. Grrr. This is going to bug me for awhile :/

Great movie though, imo. Haha, wouldn't it be funny if it won an Oscar for ensemble cast? Cuz that's like...the point of the movie, right? Together, they rock and it would be true in real life too if they won that Oscar. hehe

Well, Dr. Banner/Hulk was inspired by Jeckyll and Hyde. I thought Mark Ruffalo did a tremendous job in the role, the best actor to portray the role, IMO.

When you sit back and think about it, Captain America played a bit of a subdued role throughout the movie. I agree with your assessment on Cap, FWIW, and people who talk throughout the movie need to be shot, especially if they're bitching about it. It's a lot of money to watch a movie for some arrogant pricks to be sitting around distracting other moviegoers.
