| Just wondered how many people here had read Terry Pratchett's "Nation"? I first read it when I was in the Cook Islands (quite aptly actually as it's set on an island in the South Pelagio [Pacific]) and loved it. I got a copy finally for Xmas and have just finished it again - just as good as I remembered. It's set in a sort-of Victorian world (1860 - just after Darwin has published 'On the Origin of Species') and follows a boy from an island and an English girl who are brought together after a tsunami destroys the island nation. It's beautifully written, with a lot of imagination and humour as you'd expect from Pratchett, but it also delves into philosophy, natural science, ideas of nations and society, and religion/atheism. It's aimed at teens/younger readers but appeals to everyone. Pratchett's ideas on humanism really come through and I definitely recommend it! | |
