Just got hold of a free preview copy of "Prince of Thorns" by new author Mark Lawrence. Lots of swords and corpses on the cover. Publishers claim that Lawrence is "set to be the British answer to George R. R. Martin". I'll believe that when I see it but the book is endorsed by Robin Hobb so hopefully will be worth a read. I'll let you know what it is like when I get around to reading it.

OK, I have read it now. It is not George R. R. Martin but it is extremely good! Written in the first person from the perspective of a teenage sellsword who is a lot more than he seems. Fast-paced, exciting and very, very dark. This is a battle of evil vs evil with few flickers of light amidst the unrelenting darkness. I won't give anything else away since a lot of the fun of this book lies in the interesting plot twists. Read it when it is published later this year.

I got my free copy from Waterstones. Might be worth checking whether your local branch has any left.
