Ebook writing Empty
PostSubject: Ebook writing   Ebook writing EmptyThu Jan 20, 2011 6:35 am

Has anyone ever tried writing an ebook? or tried selling their stories through an ebook format?

Just wondering if anyone on here has ever tried it. Been researching into it recently and it seems like a VERY cheap way to make a small profit from your writing which, if marketed well, could turn into a large profit.

Just a thought, feel free to share your opinions on the topic.

I haven't tried it yet, but I am seriously thinking about doing this, at least with some short stories. If I ever get my novel finished that will be going to agents/publishers etc i.e. the professional way, but am seriously contemplating trying to sell some short stories through the ebook format.

What do you guys all think about it? Willing to give it a try? Or at least look into it? Maybe we could get together a compilation (Cough*Austin*Cough) and attempt to sell it in ebook format?

Just spitballing (or whatever that american phrase is lol)

Interesting... I didn't even know such a thing was possible. I'm gonna look into it though

yeah, definitely do, most of the sites selling ebooks just require a pdf upload (obviously the more industry standard you lay it out the better success you'll have) and amazon only require you to upload as html which automatically converts to the kindle file. I've not tried it yet, so am unsure as to how easy it is or if there are any costs involved but according to my online research it appears that there is no cost to upload to the sellers databases and you take home from 60% profit of sales upwards. Some sites require you to upload via publishers sites though.

And, again obviously, the more publicity you do for the item, the more you will sell. So, from my understanding, the main cost for doing this will be publicity.

I knew of their availability and they are a great second option for those people who get the dreaded "rejected" slip and think their manuscript is still good enough for publication.

The compilation/collaboration idea is not a new one here... my priorities have just been fracked of late... LOL

Barnes and Noble just came out with their PubIt! thing where you publish the book yourself. I forget what the detailed agreements are but that's a pretty big seller to be associated with. You have to have your own cover art too but you can make money from it (if your book sells, obviously). I'm thinking about doing this myself, actually. It doesn't look half bad and its an interesting way to get a foot in the door. Test the waters and all that. I'm in the boat with the people who are out of time for writing right now, though.

I would say, definitely give it a shot but don't put your opus magnus out there. Just a collection of short stories, or a novella.
