Programs for writing? Empty
PostSubject: Programs for writing?   Programs for writing? EmptyMon Feb 07, 2011 8:02 pm

I was wondering if anyone on this fourms knows of or uses a program to aid them in developing there stories / writing. I've googled it and found something called Snowflake but I don't want to download something like that without input from other writers.

I just think it be neat to organize my thoughts of something other than Microsoft Word, so any suggestions?

I don't use any computer software aside from word processors, though I could see certain graphing programs (the kind that let you design diagrams and flowcharts) being useful.

Personally I wouldn't use something like Snowflake, because I wouldn't want to be shoehorned into using one person's particular writing method. I prefer to learn from as many different sources as I can, and then figure out a combination that works for me.

Your writing is your own. No program will help you develop your own style of writing. Just stick to generic word processors and write write write.

Do a writing course if you think you need some education on it, they often help to cull any bad habits and allow you to develop if you pick the write one.

But I can't see how a piece of computer software will help to improve your creative writing skills. Creative writing comes from the imagination... how can a computer program aid that?

That's my thoughts on the subject anyway. Become a good writer will not happen over night. I know of authors taking 15 years to develop and finish their first novel before they get a good publishing deal. It's just a case of getting on, constantly writing and editing and getting feedback wherever you can really.

Once in a while when I'm in a creative coldspell I will go to a story-telling generator to get certain ideas (seventhsanctum.com is a great little writing tool that has all sorts of generators from name to character to setting). I don't use such a thing often; I prefer my own brain to any writing tool save the Word Perfect.

I didn't even know there was any such thing. I just use my own imagination and Microsoft Word. (And a pen and paper which I keep beside my bed for when I wake up in the middle of the night with a poem or idea in my head Wink )

I actually can't think of a time I seriously employed any idea I got from Seventh Sanctum in one of my stories.
