OK, we all have it--the little voice in the back of our heads pointing out the flaws in our work. It's how we identify mistakes that need fixing or determine what areas of our craft could use some more practice. This is a good thing that every artist needs.

But sometimes that Inner Critic can be a bit overbearing, judging things that aren't ready to be judged yet. Lately I've found that my Inner Critic wants to judge things before I've even written them, making it hard to get anything done. I used to be good at controlling this guy, but it's been so long since I've done creative writing that I guess I've lost that skill.

So for those of you with overzealous Inner Critics, how do you push past the need to be Perfect right away?

By telling myself that I can go back and fix/improve it later, and its important to just get something down to start and work with in the future. That way you can move on and get more done, whereas if you nitpick over what to write to begin with you'll just end up with nothing.

"You can't just turn on creativity like a faucet. You have to be in the right mood."

"What mood is that?"

"Last minute panic.”
