PostSubject: The Way Of Kings   Thu Aug 26, 2010 9:46 pm

People, go out and get this book. I cannot stress just how incredible is.

It has the philosophical depth of Terry Goodkind, but at all times remain subtle and part of the story. In fact, I'm starting to think that Brandon Sanderson has something of Goodkind's philosophy, especially all the important parts. There was even a part where a character said, and I quote, "Your life is your own". Gave me goosebumps.

But where Goodkind may be a better philosopher, I think Sanderson is a better writer. By that I mean, he can integrate his philosophies into his story with greater precision, depth, and subtlety. Never does the philosophy being discussed by a character(s) feel like the author is speaking to the reader, but instead retains the feel of the characters speaking to each other. Goodkind I felt was sometimes, though still rarely, guilty of the former.

Also similar to Mr. Goodkind, Brandon Sanderson makes truly noble and heroic characters. The 'good guys' are all complex, they have truly good hearts though they often suffer for it directly and indirectly. Directly, in being persecuted by more 'evil' men, and indirectly in their internal sufferings for failing to succeed in upholding their ideals, or in doubting themselves and their idealism in a non-idealistic world. Accompanying these good characters is a wide array of characters that are somewhat good and somewhat bad, many leaning in varying degrees in either direction. They are all compelling, believable, and UNIQUE. And they all have unique journeys: they all have histories, they all have suffered as well as prospered, they all have loved and lost, had to overcome adversity (sometimes INCREDIBLE adversity), their actions have had direct consequences, and they have changed as people because of those consequences/experiences. He is what I admire most in a writer: his stories are truly driven by his characters.

Most astoundingly to me, is that Brandon Sanderson combines this philosophical undertone and his characters/character development with a magnificently and uniquely constructed world. I am only slightly hesitant to say that he is on par with Tolkien or Robert Jordan. His world is VAST, with many cultures with their own histories and traits, just as he has for his characters.

And his story line(s) themselves are incredible. They have great action at times, as well as appropriately placed "slow" points in which to present new information or context for the reader to absorb. He keeps his events real: where I am critical of George R.R. Martin for going too far in making the good guys suffer, Brandon Sanderson has struck what seems to me to be a more appropriate line. People die, but they die in believable and expectable ways. Now when I say 'expectable' I don't mean that you could see it coming a mile away, I mean that after the fact you don't think that the author killed a character off just for the sake of a shock-effect. Whenever some one dies, or something bad happens, it just seems to fit the story.

And that sums up this book. For me, anyways, everything about this story: the characters, the world, and the plot, all fit near-seamlessly together.

And let us note, that the book isn't even out yet! (It is a hard release in the U.S. Brian. That's one more good thing about Canada I guess.)

Hahaha really? I actually was trying to finish the book before the official release date for pure amusement purposes, but I didn't think that only Canada would have it already available where no where else did. Razz

Just think of it this way: I'm helping to build the anticipation and hype for you guys Very Happy

Pfeh. I might have gotten the book early, but fuckin Pete lives in Brandon Sanderson's backyard. He'll be able to get his copy signed, where I'll have to wait until he either does a signing tour through Toronto, or maybe another Comic Con.

I'd say he has me bested. Evil or Very Mad

I don't really hate Canada anyway. At least you guys have a sense of humor.

I intend to start reading Brandon Sanderson's work shortly. I have ordered the first of the Mistborn books from Amazon (thank you again, Austin), so hopefully I'll like it and get the rest of his work.

I rather enjoyed the Mistborn trilogy myself. Warbreaker was alright, not quite to my taste but close enough. Started the preview chapters of The Way of Kings that are on Tor.com last night, had to swing by my brother's today on the way from work to download the audiobook chapters. First time with listening to any kind of literature, gonna see how that goes. First 3 chapters were good though.

As I've posted every else i post, i finished way of kings.

Wow.

I had minor problems with one of the characters. But otherwise, this book is freaking amazing.

And sadly, a drop in the bucket from what i know is coming. This book is huge, but i know the story is only starting. And I'm as excited as i can be.

I agree wholeheartedly with Brian. Go get this book.

Brian, how active are you at reading Brandon's blog? The blog entry the other day had 4 interviews with Brandon posted. Each one had a little extra world info. I'd suggest checking them out if you haven't already.

(Also, check out my new title. Very Happy )

Not sure why I'm laughing so much at that, but there it is. Got an e-book version, can only imagine the size of a hardcover. Greatly enjoying it though.
