PostSubject: WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE??   Sat Aug 07, 2010 11:07 pm

So my friends and I had our first ever D&D night tonight, after listening to a hilarious podcast made by the creators of the webcomic Penny Arcade who start their first ever D&D session and then run with it.

(link to podcast: http://www.wizards.com/DnD/podcasts.aspx)

We had a great time. We were serious only about having a good time, so you got some character names like Grohin (sounds like groin) or El Bro Deltaco for an elven bard, and since I had to be the one serious character I chose Sir Percival (Percy for short) Serialingston for my wizard's name Very Happy

I wish we could have recorded our session... whenever our DM had to say one of our character's names he'd always mutter "I hate you guys so much".

We started our story as mercenaries who had just finished escorting a caravan to a mountain town beset by monsters and bandits, our characters meeting for the first time on the trek. We were sitting in the Inn kicking back, and we decided to roll a d20 to see how much of our drinks we were having. I rolled a natural 20 for mead, and the running joke was that my character's personality was thus set as a beligerent alcoholic who drank into passing out, so that I wasn't even aware of the stand off that happened in the Inn

A wounded guy ran into the Inn, begging our help. Our bard apparently had an ability to set up curtains for rituals, but he decided he would set up some curtains to hide the guy in a corner just as 6 bandits kicked in the door. Our dwarf decided to gried the bandits by kicking the door closed right after in their faces. Thankfully our bard was able to bluff the bandits into leaving. We healed the wounded hunter, who promised to show us the bandit's lair so we could fight them off and take the treasure that was apparently inside.

Our first battle went alright, with the dwarf tripping over a trap-wire, then getting stabbed in both ears by a flanking pair of bandit daggers. Me and the bard went unscathed. The bard's favorite attack was a ranged spell/song called Viscious Mocking or something. We got some great lulz as he would think of some insult to launch at the bandits, making them into emos who cut their wrists for damage (It was psychic damage in fact, but we thought our way was funnier) Razz

The last surviving bandit pleaded for his life, and we spared him to guide us through the traps and help us locate the treasure. As we were entering into a library area, we had him call out to the interior sentries to take them at unawares. There was only one guy, and we managed to get the jump on him, getting a free turn each to take him out. Unfortunately, despite flanking the guy two of us missed our attacks, and the one successful one only rolled a 1 (plus a modified 5) for damage. Many faces were palmed. The sentry managed to flee enough to call attention to his comrades.

Our bard delayed them by putting up a curtain over the doorway. The dwarf charged the sentry, but missed again. I used our hostage-bandit that we captured as a human shield and advanced with him, dealing out a lot of damage to the new enemies (two level 2 crossbowmen, and a level 4 wizard when we were still level one) who were bottle necked in the hallway with burst spells. My human shield failed me once, when the wizard cast a lightning spell that missed the hostage but burst past him and hit me. The bard was pretty much set on healing the dwarf, who ate a lot of spells and crossbow-butt ends - thankfully he had advanced right up to the crossbowmen, so they did not risk using bolts on him so he couldn't get a free attack on them. Almost all of our daily-spells and skills were used up to take down that wizard, but finally we killed them all, except our hostage.

We finished the night then, taking about 3-4 hours. It was really fun, and we'll definitely do it again sometime soon.

Sounds like a fun night Smile

See, in our group its the NPC names that get this reaction (one of them was named Tesla--it took all night to get the puns out of our systems).

Sounds like a great time had by all. Exactly like a D&D session should be.

The funny names have been a favorite of my current group. Shithead (pronounced shi-theed) is one of my personal favorites.

Oh! I forgot how my character's alcoholism played out as a running joke. First, after bluffing the bandits off we had the option to leave then and there after the treasure or wait until morning. The joke was that I was in a drunken coma and couldn't be trusted to function coherently, much less aim my spells at the right moving objects Razz

Then the following morning, a few times I tried to cast a perception roll and did shit-poor, so the joke was that I had a wicked hangover from the previous night and couldn't see through the headache

What, you? Drunk? Never..... Very Happy

Glad you're having fun. Sounds like you're with a good group of people--they know not to take the game too seriously. It's FUN to use your friends to detect booby traps Wink

LMAO! Yeah, the first trip-wire was just inside the entrance to their cave. Me and the bard looked inside and then at our dwarf: "Well, you're the warrior so... lead the way!"

Tell you what, I really have fun playing D&D, but lately work has been throwing our group off completely. If it's not my working running over into the evening, it's our DM's schedule getting changed so he has to close his store on game night. I've become discouraged by the repeated loss of game.

Had our second game today, and it was just as enjoyable as the first. We even encountered our first dragon!

...and thankfully we managed to roll very good history/perception checks (I can't really remember what we did exactly, but we rolled SOMETHING) that allowed the DM to give us some info on the specific kind of dragon, and using that along with our Bard's diplomacy rolls managed to bribe/deal our way out of a fight Razz

Two gaming sessions ago, our group was able to talk our way out of a fight with a white dragon. I was pissed as hell. No one in my group (besides me) wanted to fight him. I even did my best to fail the talking part of the encounter so that we could brawl, no go.

Here's my gaming philosophy when I play D&D- If it moves, kill it. If it doesn't move, kick it 'til it moves. Take its stuff. Buy bigger weapons. Kill bigger things.

We played last night and I got stuck in the mouth of a giant worm, just like in dragonheart. Then later I was almost killed and made in to a Bodak. That has happened in our group before so we call it "getting Bodaked." Man I love this game.

Thankfully I believe we'll be fighting the dragon next week.

I forgot to mention that last week when my DM asked what kind of damage I was dealing, after I had struck the giant worm. That is was dealing normal sword damage, with Sharlene. My swords new name.

Of course the astute among you will know that Sharlene is the name of Private Pile's gun in Full Metal Jacket.

Sharlene is also the name Homer gives Bart's putter when he plays in a mini golf tournament.

A little over seven months ago a very good friend of mine passed away suddenly. James ran our dungeons and dragons campaigns as our dungeon master.

He was an amazing friend. Smarter then anyone I've ever met. Kind, funny. He ran each of our games with more patience then I've had in my entire lifetime.

The silver lining here is his death made all my other friends closer. In two weeks, all of us will again start playing D&D in an actual campaign again. I couldn't be more excited.

As a tribute to our friend I plan on ordering D&D Jones soda. http://www.myjones.com/code/limited.php?campaign=wizards

A night of gaming and epic nerdery. I know nothing that would of made my friend happier.
