BoobQuake 2010

After an Iranian cleric claimed that earthquakes are sent by god to punish humanity for women dressing inappropriately, a blogger declared today (or yesterday, depending on where you are) to be BoobQuake that called to test the hypothesis empirically by having women wear cleavage-revealing outfits en masse.

I was laughing my ass off while appreciating these women's committment to proper scientific method until I heard the news of a 6.9 earthquake in Taiwan on BoobQuake day. Story: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/technology/Temblor+strikes+Taiwan+Boobquake/2952523/story.html

So I've learned three things today:
1) Those wacko Muslim clerics know more than we give them credit for
2) The female figure, while pleasing to look at, has supernatural powers to cause natural disasters.
3) For some reason boobs hate Taiwan.

Fear the boobs gentlemen. Fear the boobs...

Coincidence as there are hundreds of Earthquakes every single day...

Unfortunately there was an earthquake (this of course does not validate the wacko's hypothesis that immodesty causes earthquakes) but I say unfortunately because this will help validate his notion in the eyes of the simple minded. There are infact rougly half a million earthquakes every year and the lady behind Bookquake does provide a bit on insight as to whether boobs were behind any sort of quake. Turns out (unsurprisingly) they don't.

Actually, I found out that the Taiwan earthquake happened during the day but before the blog entry and facebook event were made. So it can't have been the boobs that did it

Yeah, I haven't been a fan just because there's always an earthquake going on somewhere. Taiwan (and Indonesia in general) are pretty much always shaking, because they lie amid a tectonic plate in the process of shattering. There was necessarily going to be an earthquake yesterday, somewhere.

Though I find it interesting that USGS data indicates a DECREASE in earthquake frequency over the last two years, particularly among the smaller quakes. I think we're just overly sensitive to it because of the major quakes (the 9.0 a few years back, Haiti, and a few otherrs) that made the news.

As a red-blooded heterosexual male, I have to say I'm in favor of this experiment if for no other reason than to see scantily clad women who WANT me to look at them. That'd be a great pick-up line for a geologist--"Yes, I was staring. But it's for SCIENCE!"

Yeah but boobs don't like the Taiwanese. Why else would BoobQuake cause an earthquake in Taiwan?

Or maybe their aim is just bad, and they were trying to hit Iran but missed
