WBG Book Club - Vote Empty
PostSubject: WBG Book Club - Vote   WBG Book Club - Vote EmptySun Dec 06, 2009 1:16 am

There seemed to be pretty good reception for my book club idea, so I thought I'd take it the next step further.

Starting it before Christmas when it's already into December is probably a bad idea. We'll all be busy with exams or work or family stuff, so I propose we use the time between now and January to establish how exactly we'll do this. I'll put forth some ideas I had and we can discuss them and/or throw out other ideas of your own.

Basically, it would work as a book club. We'd pick a book to read and then read through it together at the same pace so we can discuss it. I know that most book clubs usually pick a book for a month (or even a week) and just read the whole thing to discuss, but I think we all have more restrictive schedules to allow that. So my idea was to do at a bi-weekly pace where we pick 7 or so chapters, depending on what all our schedules are like and how long the chapters are.

For instance, we would get together in a discussion thread and everyone would say how busy they are. If everyone has more free time, we could up the amount to as much as 10 chapters. If a few people have much busier schedules, we could lower it to only a few. We would also take into account everyone's reading pace. I'll usually ready at least a few chapters a night when I'm reading through a book, unless I'm dead tired or have so much studying/homework that I don't read at all. If someone goes slower than that however, we would take that into account.

As for what books we do, I understand that not everyone will want to read some of the books we choose. They might start them and then give up if its just not to their tastes. That's fine, I think, because they can always just join in when we get to another book that they have interest in.

In fact, one idea I had was that we alternate who gets to choose the book. That way everyone gets their choice, where if we always voted there's the chance that someone never gets the one they want. For instance, I said I wanted to start with Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. I know RS said on the SOT forum that he tried starting it once and couldn't get past the first few chapters. If he chooses not to read it, or tries it again but still finds he doesn't like it, he can simply bide his time until it's his turn to torment us with a book we all hate Razz

I'll wait until we all come to a consensus on the book-selection issue before opening the floor on what book to start with.

I'd stick with a faster pace honestly. I know everyone reads at different paces, but do you really wanna spend 4 or 5 months reading one book seems kinda slow to me. I'd cap out at 2-3 months for a book so just divide the book by 2 or 3 and thats how much we have to read.

Also, I'd say go in a circle for book choosing, simplifies things. Start with yourself and then go in alphabetical order.

Try pages.

As far as what books we read...

It really isn't beyond the realm of possibility to read and discuss more than one book, as well. I'd limit it to three books at a time at most, though.

Well, I am a slow reader (1 Chapter a night usually), but I could try picking up the pace a bit. I wouldn't be able to do more than one book nat a time myself, so i would only be able to participate in some of the discussions if you go the way rs likes. I like the idea of everyone getting to choose a book to read.

While I may be a fast reader, I'm not anything of a multi-tasker so I don't read more than one (leisure) book at once Razz

And one chapter a night would be fine Steve. In two weeks that would be (allowing for nights where you don't read) 10-14 chapters read, which I think is just fine.

Actually, when I suggest multiple books, I am thinking that because not all people will want to read the same book, if we have 3 different options going at the same time, it'll be easier to pick and choose.

I like that idea. But given that there isn't that many people here, I think the idea of having more than 2 books at once would be stretching it a bit thin. Unless every single member here suddenly jumps on the bandwagon anyways Razz

Oh, I don't disagree, which is why I said limit it to three books. I didn't say it was the minimum. :-p

Wait... I just thought of a problem with that. What happens if I want to read both of the ones going on? I won't have the time to do more than one Razz

Easy fix? Before we start, say "HEY! I wanna read both." And we will set that next book on the back burner.

Otherwise, just read it on your own time. Your call. Razz
