Book Club Idea Empty
PostSubject: Book Club Idea   Book Club Idea EmptySat Nov 28, 2009 3:24 am

What does everyone think of having something like a book club, where we all read the same books at the same time and then talk about them here: what we liked, didn't like, and so on?

I kind of had something in mind where we'd pick a book and then, depending on how busy everyone's lives are, do something like pick a certain amount of chapters to read in a certain time frame, like a chapter a week, or 3 chapters per two weeks, or 5 chapters a month... however we'd prefer to have it set up so we have enough time to do the readings but also can move ahead at a comfortable and steady pace.

I got the idea because I wanted to start reading through the Wheel of Time series again after reading the newest book. I haven't done it in a long time, but I also wanted to actually talk with people about it as I went. When I wanted to talk about the SOT books when I started reading them, I joined PI. I tried doing to same thing with a WOT forum a few years back, but it ended up being an unpleasant experience and I left it behind.

But afterwords I wanted to start on a new series, like George R. Martin's series or something. And I'd want to do the same thing with that. Now rather than ending up being a member of an absurd amount of forums, I'd love nothing more than to have a single place to do it with people I already know well, like, and respect. So does anyone know where I can find such a place?

lol I kid, I kid Razz

I just wanted to see if there was any interest in the idea here before I actually started something up, only to find myself the only one doing it Book Club Idea Icon_evil

I could possibly just maybe perhaps be interested in such an idea, yes.

Shocked

I love the idea... the problem is I'm not sure if I have the time.

It's similar to my author of the month plan that kind've fell through.

The problem with the author of the month idea is that it either requires you to know the author already, or to read some of his work within that time. That's just too much in too short a time. Thats why I've never participated in it to date:P

But I'm not really in a position to blitz through a book in a day or two either, and am more than willing to make it so that we only read something like 3 chapters a month. Even the busiest of people, if actually interested, should be able to read that much in that time.

That's actually a thought. We could set it up so that we discuss a chapter a week, even have a chat session on the subject. That would actually allow us to set firm deadlines without causing a major rush.

I could see us reinventing that particular feature in such a manner.

You won't be the only one Calwyn.

And no excuses about books being expensive, libraries are there for a reason!

Chat Session discussions sound like an excellent idea. Let's do this!
