The Elfstones of Shannara is the second book written Terry Brooks, published in 1982, and is a sequel to The Sword of Shannara.

The Elfstones of Shannara takes place approximately two generations after the events of Sword. The protagonist, Wil Ohmsford, follows in his grandfather Shae's footsteps in becoming an unwilling participant in a quest directed by the mysterious Druid Allanon.

This book is considered his best in the series by many of Brooks' fans, and for good reason. The Elfstones of Shannara has horse-back chases, magical battles to the death, large scale demon-war, Elven politics, and a brilliant cast of characters.

Aside from a single cameo from our friend Flick Ohmsford, Eventine Elessedil and Allanon are the only recurring characters. Everyone else is fresh, unique, and intriguing.

The story of the Elves in Brooks' universe is fascinating and full of wonder. Sure, Elves are always Elves, but Brooks manages to give them whole new life and brilliance. As the story continues, you can't help but wish you were in that world, with those characters, fighting to save Arborlon and the Four Lands. Who wouldn't want to go on a dangerous quest filled with gypsies, witches, and flying Rocs? Who wouldn't want to ride alongside the great Stee Jans, and fight to the death for Eventine Elessedil?

Sword sets the stage, but The Elfstones of Shannara is where the story really gets started. Every reader of fantasy should put this book on the top of their to-read list if they haven't read it already. The genre simply wouldn't be the same without this book.
