| The Pillars of Creation by Terry Goodkind Even though many Terry Goodkind fans cite this book as one of their least favorite in the series, The Pillars of Creation is high up on my list of favorites. The two major characters who are introduced take the reader on a wild and thought-provoking ride. Book Summary: - Spoiler:
Entering the world of New York Times bestselling author Terry Goodkind, we find ourselves gripped by fear, held by spellbound suspense, and, most of all, aching to be there beside people who capture our hearts.
Now, in his latest and most lavish adventure yet, a young woman’s struggle for salvation from inner demons and ancient injustice takes on terrifying dimensions. Tormented her entire life by inhuman voices, Jennsen seeks to end her intolerable agony. She at last discovers a way to silence the voices. For everyone else, the torment is about to begin.
Richard Rahl and his wife, Kahlan, have been reunited after their long separation, but with winter descending and the paralyzing dread of an army of annihilation occupying their homeland, they must venture deep into a strange and desolate land. Their quest turns to terror when they find themselves the helpless prey of a tireless hunter.
Exploited by those intent on domination, Jennsen finds herself drawn into the center of a violent struggle for conquest and revenge. Worse yet, she finds her will seized by dark forces more abhorrent than anything she ever envisioned. Only then does she come to realize that the voices were real.
Staggered by loss and increasingly isolated, Richard and Kahlan desperately struggle to survive. But if they are to live, they must stop the relentless, unearthly threat that comes out the darkest night of the human soul. To do so, Richard will be called upon to face the demons stalker among the Pillars of Creation.
Enter a world without rival. Discover breathtaking adventure and true nobility of spirit. Find out why millions of readers the world over have elevated Terry Goodkind to the ranks of legend.
The reason that many Goodkind fans are disappointed upon reading this book for the first time is that their much-loved heroes Richard and Kahlan fail to make an appearance until the very end. I happen to not be one of those particular fans. Being introduced to two new and interesting characters was a breath of fresh air for me. There’s a thread that alvspr wrote entitled “The Brilliance of the Pillars of Creation.” I urge anyone who has read the book to read that thread. Everything he wrote is amazing and he captured the true essence of The Pillars of Creation. Here is a link to it: http://www.terrygoodkind.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6The two main characters that The Pillars of Creation centers on are vastly different. A lot of people disagree with me on this but I really never cared for Jennsen, a so-called protagonist. She was completely naïve throughout the novel and didn’t seem to have many admirable traits. Her ignorance enabled people to easily manipulate her. It was sometimes painful knowing that she was being used and told horrific and false tales and believed them wholeheartedly. I know that she led a sheltered life and that’s the reason for her being like that but she definitely still irked me. That aside, Terry Goodkind did an excellent job of writing her in a way so that I loved seeing her journey even with my dislike of her character. Being a stubborn person myself, that is a very tall order. I found the other main character named Oba to be captivating. While reading about him, I was in the twisted mind of a person who cared nothing about others and everything about himself. It was astonishing to read from the point of view of a person who was numb to normal human emotions but Goodkind made the journey worthwhile. Even though I have differing opinions on the two main characters, there’s a commonality between them: Following them on their journeys and seeing how they change and overcome adversity and struggles was captivating. That is one thing that I think makes The Pillars of Creation such a great novel. Everything is written with distinct detail and perfect characterization. The details are so precise that they make the reader feel like they are actually there going through the same struggles that the main characters are. Terry Goodkind took a chance in writing this book and I think that he succeeded tremendously. Not only is it a brilliant ride from beginning to end, it also instills lessons about the world we live in today such as the danger of having preconceived notions and prejudices and the rewards of seeing past them. It also shows the value in learning to open your eyes and see through such prejudices to the truth of how the world actually is. The Pillars of Creation is a novel showing how important it is to be able to move past prejudices and on to the future that lies in wait.

| You and I have major differences as far as the character Jennsen is concerned. Otherwise, I wholeheartedly agree... this is one of Terry's best. I personally feel that on the whole as a story, this is the best of the bunch, even if I like some of his other books better. | |

| Very good review, Bethany. I think you and I have more or less similar views on Jennsen and Oba. | |

| This has been said multiple times in various places (but only this once here)... it'd be interesting to read POC first, without any previous knowledge of Goodkind's world. I think your views of Jennsen might be very different than they are having read the other six books first. | |

| Very well written. Good job. I thought Jennsen was extremely boring to read about and I found myself wanting to skip past anything involving her. | |

| Jennsen's sections were like watching grass grow. At least the grass is pretty... I guess.
She lifts right out of the entire series.

| lol, ya I know Bethany, I was supposed to go to bed...but I had to comment on your review first I thought you did a great job at capturing the story. While Oba did drive me crazy (at the things he did), he was very well written by Terry Goodkind. Like you, I thought the book was very well written. I always have found it fascinating to hear from people who read PoC first, and how they were pulled into the story, without the prejudice against it that many long time readers have because of the fact that R&K only make a short appearance. I think their reaction really shows the skill that Terry had in writing the book, and I think it is that quality of writing that really drew me in as well. Anyway...you did a great job Bethany, thanks for posting this. | |

| Excellent review Bethany, and quite a subtle little 'shameless plug' to the TG forum as well | |

| A well written review about one of the least interesting books I have ever read.
Bethany makes us all sad by refusing to put her prose to the good use we all want her too.
Here's hoping you pick a better muse next time /smirk
