| On April 10, 2010 Omni and I drove out to Lancastar, PA, to adopt our two rat pups, Gabe and Tycho.
Thursday morning at about 9am, a heavily-sedated Gabe laid on a veterinary table, his head resting on my palm. The conversation with the vet hadn't taken long. There wasn't much to discuss. Gabe had a mass in his abdomen, and his kidneys were failing. He was in pain, and he was going to die. The was only one thing to do.
There were some choices to be made about the procedure. Did we want the body, or would we prefer cremation? Would he be cremated privately, or with others? Papers were signed.
The technician injected him with something to make him sleepy. This wouldn't kill him, just relax him so that his last moments would be without stress. He laid on my hand as we stroked him and told him what a good boy he was.
We'd chosen not to watch the final stages of the procedure. And so, after we'd said our goodbyes, the technician carefully wrapped him in a towel and carried him away.
Rest in Peace, little buddy.

| Thanks. Right now we're tying to help Tycho deal with the loss. He's never been alone, and is obviously having trouble adjusting. Yesterday he came across the water bottle that had been in the small cage we used to take Gabe to the vet, and he started freaking out sniffing it all over. So sad. He's a lot more cautious about leaving the cage now, too. In a weird way he's started acting more like his brother did. | |

| In rat terms he wasn't really young (2-3 years is about average) so he did live to a decent age. I had hoped that they would both get closer to 4 years, like they're dad (not sure how old he got, but he was around 4 when we saw him). Hopefully Tycho still has a few years in him.

| I understand your loss BB, we are about to put our dog down. She's very sick, can't get around very well, and doesn't eat. She's had a good full life and we will miss her. | |

| Drefan, Gabe was in pretty much the same condition. He was refusing food and water, and every time he tried to move he shook horribly.
I'm glad your dog had a full life.

| So sorry to hear about Gabe. It's so hard to lose a pet and I hope that Tycho is adjusting to life without his brother. | |

| BB and drefan - I am so sorry for your loss. It's so awful to lose a pet.
It truly is a bad month for pets. I'm in the horrid position of waiting for my hamster to die at the moment. Mindy is 14 months old and the last couple of days she hasn't been eating or really moving. She can't walk and she's shaking badly. She won't let me touch her - she's never been aggressive but she went for me earlier today. I've just been trying to keep her as comfy as possible. I hope it's quick :-( The vet can't help. | |

| I'm so sorry to hear that I'm guessing you don't have a local vet with the equipment to properly treat (or, if it's too late for that, euthanize) small animals? That's a shame. If you've got a sick dog you can't throw a rock without hitting a decent vet, but when it comes to the little guys you're lucky if the vet knows which end is which :/ | |

| No, none local sadly.
She died last night. I had her wrapped in a towel to try and keep her warm so I was with her at least. I don't think she suffered so that's something.

| Hopefully she didn't suffer, but she's better off. If she wasn't eating and wasn't behaving normally, obviously something was seriously wrong. I'm glad you didn't have to bear it too terribly long yourself. | |

| I'm glad she didn't suffer, and that you were able to be there with her. I just saw her picture on Facebook. She was adorable | |
